Black Urea®

Black Urea® is the leading technology of greater nitrogen use efficiency.  Black Urea® is specifically formulated to reduce losses, up to 25%-30%. So more nitrogen is available for your crops than with un-coated urea.

Nitrogen is one of the most expensive nutrients to supply to crops, and commercial fertilisers represent a significant portion of the cost of crop production. Compounding the cost is the fact that not all the nitrogen that granular urea fertiliser delivers actually reaches the crops.


In the field, it’s been observed that around 40% of the nitrogen released by fertiliser reaches crops. That’s significantly under efficiency levels of up to 90% that have been recorded in well-managed research plots and in the field.

Black Urea® Innovation works by making small improvements to each leg of the nitrogen cycle in your soil. By using biological processes to stabilize nutrients in the soil, this promotes less volatilization and leaching creating greater Nitrogen Use Efficiency (NUE).

How It works

The Coating

Launch® is a liquid Carbon Coating to make Black Urea® and Black DAP™ and is added to liquid urea, UAN (urea ammonium nitrate), anhydrous ammonia (gas).  It is a Patented innovation that has a positive effect on the stabilisation of different forms of nitrogen and phosphorus in varying soil conditions.   

Does Black Urea® Work Everywhere?

Yes, but not always economically. By working on a  physical and biological level, only where these processes are limiting will an economically viable result persist. Soils with <3% soil organic matter (SOM) and/or a low cation exchange capacity (CEC) will  always perform to expectations, soils out of this range may perform if biological activity is suppressed due to other environmental influences. 

Why Not Just Humic Acid?

We do include a small amount of technical humic acid to provide exchange capacity (and colour). Only those humic compounds  with a specific ratio of functional groups and with a very high surface  area are effective at these small amounts and none are capable of  increasing the metabolic necessity of target soil microbes by themselves.
